The DECO in Downtown Shakopee Features Work of Local Artist
The DECO, a new mixed-use community in downtown Shakopee, is nearing completion. Developed, constructed and managed by Enclave, the building inhabits the location of the former City Hall built in 1883 and celebrates the City’s rich history with interiors inspired by the 1920’s art deco era. The building’s palette combines rich navy tones with gold accents that are complemented by modern and hand-picked finishes.
A passion for supporting local art, Enclave enlisted the help of Stephanie Giesen-Kath to create a mural in the building’s fitness studio that can be viewed from large storefront windows along Holmes Street. Giesen-Kath was chosen through a call for artists for her artistic vision and ability to artfully incorporate the building’s history into a contemporary design that perfectly portrays the character of the building.
Our team had the chance to catch up with her to learn more about the mural’s design and what inspires her as an artist.
Q: What was your inspiration behind the design of The DECO’s fitness studio mural?
A: When I read The DECO's art submission, I first saw DECO in the name and I instantly knew it needed to have an art deco style for cohesiveness, plus the feel of being in a downtown, with buildings, along with non-literal rays of sunshine lifting you up and shining brightly on you as you workout.
Q: Why do you love what you do?
A: There is something about creating that brings me such excitement, a welcoming and beautiful space has such a positive impact on people whether they realize it or not. Seeing a space transform makes me jump up and down with joy.
Q: When did you first start creating art?
A: I've been creating art for as long as I can remember. In elementary school I was doodling, sketching, building/decorating my doll house, painting closets at my parents rentals. In middle school & high school I was drawing house plans and sketching formal dress designs. I started my professional career as an interior designer which turned into graphic design work after starting my own business with invitations, art prints and small business branding. My love of painting fun designs on walls for myself turned into painting murals for others. Now I have a mix of creative adventures with interiors, murals, art prints, & branding.
Q: Who or what are your biggest influences?
A: Nature, travel, fashion, home furnishings, sounds, basic items, feelings all inspire and influence my creativity. I also grew up with my mom and her mom's creative spirit.
Q: What advice would you give to a young artist following in your steps?
A: Create what you love, what makes your heart sing and don't be afraid of doing your own thing in your own way. Surround yourself with people who support and value your work. Plus, don't be afraid to change mediums and styles as you grow and change.
